(April 10, 2008 - Jerusalem) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently visited Yad Vashem.

During his first visit to Israel, Prime Minister Tusk toured Yad Vashem’s Holocaust History Museum and Children’s Memorial, participated in a wreath-laying ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance and signed the Official Visitors’ Book.

During the visit, Poland’s Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski presented Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate Avner Shalev with the gold Medal for Merit to Culture (“Gloria Artis”) in recognition of his contribution to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. The medal, awarded in three classes, gold, silver and bronze, has been conferred since 1991 to both Polish and foreign nationals who are active in the field of Polish culture and arts.

At the conclusion of his visit, the Prime Minister said: “There are places and times that are so emotional that it is difficult to find the words… Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the people at Yad Vashem, people can learn as much about themselves as they can the history… The fact that I was joined today by Righteous Among the Nations Vladyslav Bartoszewski is very important to me on a personal level. If not for the Righteous Among the Nations, it would have been better that the world not exist at all.”
