Anguish of the Ghetto

The main existential hardships ghetto inhabitants had to confront were hunger, overcrowding, and the complete isolation from their surroundings. The Germans allotted starvation rations to the ghetto inhabitants. Tens of thousands died of malnutrition and resultant diseases, and many others survived only by smuggling in food. Mortality in the ghetto also resulted from periodic German acts of terror and from forced labor under harsh conditions.
