Some of the documentation in the Yad Vashem Archives arrived in inferior condition. In 1979, a professional conservation and restoration laboratory was established in the Archives and efforts were made to restore the materials. The laboratory is responsible for preservation of documents, photographs and works of art; it oversees and advises on all activities involving the conservation and repair of original materials.
The materials are processed in the laboratory according to their condition and historical significance. The treatment process itself is documented and photographed. After treatment and construction of appropriate containers, the materials are moved to climate-controlled storage areas for safekeeping for generations.
