In the years 1943-1944, Assisi became a refuge for Jews who managed to reach it. The Bishop of Assisi, Monsignor Giuseppe Placido Nicolini, appointed Father Aldo Brunacci responsible for the rescue operation of Jews and their concealment in 26 monasteries throughout the town, some of them normally closed to outsiders by the monastic regulations. This operation enabled some 200 Jews to hide in the town, to receive shelter and food, and also provided them with forged documents that would allow them to live under assumed identities during the war period.
