Distinctive Jewish badge (yellow Star) that the Jews of France were forced to wear on their clothing in accordance with the directives of the German occupation.
In the territories of France occupied by the Germans, Jews aged six and over were forced to wear a yellow star badge on their clothing on the left side on the chest. The badge was printed with the word Juif ("Jew" in French).
In the unoccupied zone of France, under Vichy rule, the government refused to enforce the order, fearing that the population would resist the imposition of a distinctive badge on the Jewish citizens of France.
Even after November 1942, when the whole of France was occupied by the Germans, they refrained from enforcing the wearing of the Jewish star in Vichy for fear that it would arouse resistance among the population.
