South-African born Marius Garb enlisted at the beginning of the war and was sent to fight in western desert of North Africa. As a member of the 4th armored division of the South African forces, Garb participated in the decisive battle of El Alamein. When the enemy’s lines were broken and the German army pulled back, he found a Nazi flag in an abandoned German jeep and inscribed on it: “Taken on November 5, 1942, behind the El Alamein lines." Garb kept the flag as a symbol of the Allied victory over the Germans.
