Binyamin Cherny was born in Berezino, near Minsk, capital of Belarus.
When World War II broke out, he was drafted into the Red Army and made an officer, thanks to his Economics and Mathematics degrees. A company commander, he was wounded in the Stalingrad battles in January 1943. Cherny was awarded several medals and badges of honor in recognition of his courage during the war period.
After the war, Binyamin Cherny married and had two children. He immigrated to Israel in 1990, and passed away some five years later.
The Order of the Red Star is awarded for extraordinary valor in defense of the Soviet Union. It was donated to Yad Vashem by his daughter Alla, and husband Alex Goldman, who immigrated to Israel in 1973.
