Yad Vashem is closed on Saturdays and all Jewish Holidays.

Entrance to the Holocaust History Museum is not permitted for children under the age of 10. Babies in strollers or carriers will not be permitted to enter.

Remembering the Jewish community of Würzburg

The vast majority of the Jews of Würzburg were murdered during the Holocaust. Every family, and every name represents an entire world, with its history and its memories. Before you are the stories of two Jewish families from Würzburg. We see their faces, learn their names and reveal their stories.

The Sachs Family

The Sachs Family

Simon-Michael Sachs was born in Würzburg in 1887; his parents were Samuel-Nathaniel Sachs and Hana-Hindle née Rosenbaum. Aside from Simon, Hana and Samauel had seven other children. Samuel owned a textile factory which manufactured suits and employed some 40 tailors. Three of Samuel’s sons, Simon, Gustav-Gershon and Beno-Pinchas worked in the factory. During the First World War the factory produced uniforms for the German Army. In 1916, Adolf Sachs, one of Samuel’s sons, was killed in action, while serving as a German soldier in France. His place of burial is unknown.

Ruth Fanny Hanover was born in Würzburg in 1923, the daughter of Rabbi Dr. Sigmund (Shimon) Hanover and Klara Hanover (née Deutsch). Her elder sister, Rosi, was born in Fürth in 1917. Rabbi Dr. Hanover served as the rabbi of the city of Würzburg and the surrounding district from 1920. ×Rabbi Dr. Sigmund Hanover, 1880 – 1964Sigmund Hanover was born in Wandsbeck, Hamburg, in 1880.
