Mogilev: One of the Untold Stories...

Grades: For high-school students, ages 17-18

Introduction

In the following educational environment, we offer you a model of teaching a complex and morally difficult subject – that of the history of the Holocaust in the occupied Soviet territories. This subject is presented in more detail and in further depth on the "The Untold Stories" project website.

The purpose of this learning environment is to discuss the Holocaust as it unfolded on the territories of the Soviet Union in the specific location of the city of Mogilev in Belarus. We briefly survey the history of the Jewish community in Mogilev from its inception to the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany in June 1941. The war period addresses two related but distinct aspects of the Holocaust in Mogilev: the rapid destruction of the Mogilev Jews and the role of Mogilev in the development of the Final Solution.
