The seminar for Educators in UK Jewish Day Schools and Educational Frameworks is an eight day programme for teachers who are currently teaching in UK Jewish Day Schools and Educational Programmes on both formal and informal platforms, in high school and upper KS2. The seminar will focus on helping educators expand their skills when teaching in a formal setting, as well as helping them plan Holocaust themed events and ceremonies in both a formal and informal setting. The seminar consists of accurate historically based lectures given by world famous Yad Vashem scholars, combined with hands-on, creative, ready to use teaching units that model ways in which the history can be adapted, presented and aimed at a specific group of students. In addition, great emphasis is placed on understanding the Yad Vashem educational approach which emphasises the importance of protecting students from inappropriate material which might traumatise them instead of helping them learn and understand. Because this seminar is focused on educators in Jewish learning environments, subjects of Jewish interest are presented including how to use Shoah studies when teaching Jewish Law, the weekly Torah portion, moral dilemmas, and Jewish Life Cycle. There are special classes for those who teach or work with younger students and those who teach or work with older, more mature students.
Included in the topics studied, under the guidance of world famous professors, teachers, and educators are; The History of Antisemitism, The Polish Jewish Community Between the Wars, What is Unique About Nazi Antisemitism?, Current Antisemitism, The Jewish Response to the Rise of Nazism in Germany 1933 -38, Life in the Ghettos, Moral Dilemmas During the Shoah, The Unique Role of Women in the Resistance Movements, Using the Shoah to Enhance the study of Jewish Life Cycle, Rabbinic Leadership During the Shoah, The Camps, Returning to Life After the Holocaust, and Post Holocaust Theological Responses, to name but a few.
We will discuss the importance of determining when Shoah studies provide an appropriate approach to accomplishing broader educational goals.
