Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan, who is currently visiting France, met this morning with President of the French Republic H.E. Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris. World-renowned Holocaust historian and Holocaust survivor Serge Klarsfeld and Chairman of Le Comité Pour Yad Vashem in France Pierre-François Veil.
The two discussed Holocaust distortion and antisemitism in France and around the world and how to deal with these worrisome trends.
"At my meeting, I expressed to the President my great appreciation for his personal and his government's commitment to Holocaust commemoration, documentation and education, and to the ongoing fight against Holocaust distortion, antisemitism and racism," Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan expressed at the conclusion of his meeting with President Macron. "I conveyed to the President my concern regarding the rise in expressions of hatred in France both from the extreme right and extreme left, as well as from radical Islamists. We agreed that more action needs to be taken in this area."
Currently, the new Moshal Shoah Legacy Campus is being constructed at Yad Vashem. The complex will include the Shapell Family Collections Center which will serve as home to some of the most advanced conservation laboratories in the world for the preservation of Holocaust-era documentation, artifacts and artwork. During the meeting with President Macron, Dayan discussed an initiative for support from the French government to dedicate one of these spaces to the memory of Holocaust survivor Simone Veil. As a politician and a Holocaust survivor, Simone Veil, who lost almost her entire family during the Holocaust, devoted herself to Holocaust remembrance and supported many Yad Vashem initiatives and activities.
During his stay in Paris, Dayan also met with UNESCO Secretary-General Audrey Azoulay and discussed with her the strengthening of ties and activities on the topic of Holocaust education in UNESCO schools.
