Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan hosted the President of Hungary, H.E. Katalin Novák, on her first visit to Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. President Novák toured the Holocaust History Museum, participated in a memorial ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance, visited the Children’s Memorial and signed the Yad Vashem Guest Book.
The President of Hungary wrote in Yad Vashem's Guestbook:
"To show, to remember and to educate are of utmost importance. Yad Vashem incorporates all three. I bow in front of the memories of the Holocaust victims."
At the end of her visit, the President and Chairman Dani Dayan met with a group of five Holocaust survivors for a discussion in Yad Vashem's International School for Holocaust Studies. Conducted in Hungarian, the meeting was an opportunity for the President to hear firsthand the stories and testimonies of these survivors from Hungary. Among the survivors was David Leitner, who in 2004 was one of six torchlighters chosen to participate in Israel’s State Opening Ceremony for Holocaust Remembrance Day. At the end of the gathering, the survivors, their families, the President and Yad Vashem’s Chairman lit a memorial candle and together proclaimed "Am Yisrael Chai", the Jewish people live on!
