March 1943, three members of the Judenrat (Jewish council) in Kaunas, Lithuania. On the far right is the secretary of the Judenrat in the ghetto, Avraham Tory, and in the center is Fritz Gadiel, who was the head of the graphics department in the Judenrat. On the far left - Rudolf Volsonok, one of the heads of the Communist underground in the ghetto.
Gadiel was responsible for creating symbols for the offices and police in the ghetto, such as armbands, etc. His department employed many who were considered “unfit for hard labor” and thereby saved many lives. In addition he employed many Jews for other work he did for the Germans, such as copying works of art for their private collections. Gadiel and his wife were deported in 1944, but survived. Their three-year-old son was caught together with other children and murdered when the ghetto was liquidated.
