In the period of the deportations of the Jews of Thrace, most of this region was in Bulgarian hands. On 4 March 1943, the Bulgarians imprisoned nearly all the Jews in the area of Thrace that had been annexed from Greece – some 4,000 Jews – and turned them over to the Germans. After three weeks the Germans deported these Jews to the Treblinka death camp.
