On Sunday, December 21 at Yad Vashem, Ronit Fisher will be awarded the second annual Danek Gertner PhD scholarship for her case study on Jewish-Christian relations during the Holocaust. Fisher’s research is titled Jewish-Christian Neighbor Relations in Multi-National Border Regions in Eastern Europe During the Holocaust: Bukovina and Bessarabia (in Romania) as a Case Study.
The ceremony will take place at 12:00 in the lecture room of the International Institute for Holocaust Research (Room 223) at Yad Vashem.
Fisher will lecture on “Neighborly Relations Put to the Test: The Deportation of Jews from Bukovina and Bessarabia to Transnistria”. Opening comments will be made by Avner Shalev, Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate; Prof. David Bankier, Head of the International Institute for Holocaust Research; and Danek Gertner, the donor.
Donor Danek Gertner of Austria is a Holocaust survivor. Following the war, he became a successful businessman, whose philanthropy has aided many cultural enterprises, including activities for Holocaust remembrance. In addition to the PhD scholarship, Gertner has made many generous contributions to Yad Vashem, including the construction of the International Institute for Holocaust Research, the Gertner Center for International Holocaust Conferences, the Archives conservation laboratory, and a document collection in Poland.
