In response to media reports regarding the proposed name change of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp

23 April 2006

Yad Vashem supports the request of the Polish Government, as reported in the media, to add the words “the former Nazi German Camp” to the name of the Auschwitz – Birkenau Camp, since this is an historical fact. While we understand the rationale that stands behind this request, we would also like to see the words “extermination camp” noted in the formal name of the camp.
