The Dutch Olympic women's gymnastics team at the Amsterdam Olympics, 1928. The team won the gold medal. The coach was Jewish, as were five of the team members.
The Jewish team members are standing on the first row: From left: Helena Nordheim (second), Anna Polak (third), Estella Agsteribbe (fourth), Judik Simons (last) and Elka de Levie (second row, first from right).

The management of Berlin Jewish community schools initiated the event. It was the first sports event for Jewish schools in Berlin. 12 Berlin schools (public and private) participated in the event that was held at the Grunewald sports ground.

Cousins Gustav and Alfred Flatow represented Germany at two Olympic Games, and won six medals between them. Both Gustav and Alfred were murdered in the Terezin ghetto. Continue reading >>>

In 1941, Sonya's parents, Israel and Riva Sabezinski, and three of her siblings, Anna, Dora and Natan, were confined in the Riga ghetto and murdered in one of the Aktions in 1941. Her brother Grisha was killed while serving in the ranks of the Red Army in 1942. Sonya survived in Stalingrad. To read the full story >>>

Anita Kempner doing gymnastics in the yard of her house in Breslau, Germany (today Wroclaw, Poland), late 1930s. Behind her – presumably her sister, Renate. Anita was born in Breslau in 1930, four years after Renate. Their younger brother Lutz was born in 1936. All three siblings were murdered in the Holocaust, as was their mother, Roza née Avraham. The fate of their father, Bernhard, is unknown.
